Defend Forgotten America Series Finale: Provider Tax Solutions Can Help Save Rural Hospitals

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Defend Forgotten America (DFA) today released the fourth and final video in its provider tax series, focusing on how state-based financing tools can help address the growing pressure on vulnerable hospitals across America.

The video highlights the urgent stakes for rural and small urban communities as hospitals face closures, service cuts, and financial instability. Last year alone, at least 90 rural hospitals experienced closures, service reductions, or credit downgrades, including 24 that closed completely.

“Keeping hospitals open requires policies that recognize the unique challenges these communities face,” said DFA Founder and CEO Jenn Pellegrino. “This series demonstrates that locally designed financing models are working, and policymakers should build on these successful approaches to ensure all Americans continue to have access to quality healthcare close to home.”
